A couple months back Sockeye launched a campaign very near and dear to our hearts: “It’s Our Nature.” It’s about the Metro Natural Areas Program. This program stemmed from a voter approved bond measure to protect the natural areas around the Portland Metropolitan region. To date, they’ve protected 11,000 acres, 90 miles of river and stream, over 26 species, water and air quality, and opened 3 major nature parks. Not too shabby. As our nature goes so does our well-being. It’s nice to know someone is protecting it.
The initial strategy was simple, get the word out about the strides Metro had been making and thank the voters for their continued support. As we became involved messaging strategy evolved to be more than simply thanking the
voters. It became apparent that the messaging strategy needed to touch on the reasons Oregonians had voted for these bond measures in the first place: speak to how protecting nature protects us. Every piece of messaging needed to portray this idea. From inserting plantable paper with Black-Eyed Susan flower seeds in Portland Monthly to printing on organic T-Shirts to opting out of putting our messaging on carbon-emitting busses, every choice was made with the voter’s dollar, nature conservancy and our message of protecting nature in mind.
In the end, what we created was a well-rounded campaign filled with compelling visuals, emotional copy and thoughtful media placements. We spoke directly to the voter’s heart and mind, armed voters with stats about Metro’s progress, invited them to experience the natural areas (both online and in person), and thanked them for making it all possible.
